Hiking snacks

I like to eat something small at home before a hike—toast with an egg, oatmeal, or sometimes just a banana. Nothing too heavy. I want energy for the trail, not the sensation that breakfast is coming along for the entire hike.

My two favorite trail snacks are strawberry probiotic Yoggis and Korean barbecue pork bites. They’re easy to pack, and they hit the spot when I need a little something along the way.

What I bring depends on how long the hike is and how much climbing we’re doing. But one thing is non-negotiable: water. I’ll be honest, staying hydrated has always been a struggle for me. As a little girl, I never seemed to need much water. Now I’m learning—slowly, and usually after a reminder—that drinking enough matters for how I feel and for my overall health.

And of course, water for my little besties, the puppies. They’re always running extra miles while we’re busy following the trail, so they need plenty of breaks and drinks too.
